Research and evidence-based standards paving the way for a digital and sustainable transformation of the built environment

Abstract: Purpose Researchers and standardisation bodies are key to accelerating societal transition and contributing to society’s demands for sustainability, resilience and digitalisation. Standards are the agreed-upon best practices published by national or international bodies and are key enablers of transformation. Scholars have not yet identified a relationship between standards and facilities management (FM) research. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of formal standards in FM research. “…Governments and digital innovation organizations obtain references through digital transformation policies to formulate effective and sustainable transformation policies [41]. Standardization of products, processes, and governance systems is essential for continuous transformation, reflecting the need to increase human life expectancy [42]. Based on Gomez-Trujillo and Gonzalez-Perez [43], transformation policies are initiated by the government, for example, in India through the "Digital India Programme", which aims to provide a digital platform and carry out an electronification processes and increase transparency that can reduce the level of corruption so that it is in line with one of the objectives of the SGDs.…”

“…Standards, such as the documents developed by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), represent a globally agreed-upon way to develop products and services and to ensure safe, reliable and quality trade across the world [4]. Thus, to ensure the best possible development and to overcome the challenges faced in FM, such as a digital and sustainable built environment (BE), researchers, practitioners and standardization experts need to collaborate [2,3].…”
