“…3 The results of this analysis are not reported here. 4 KRACKHARDT andSTERN (1998) andD'AMORE et al (2013) use the E-I index, that is equal to: (number of external linkages -number of internal linkages) / (number of external linkages + number of internal linkages); anyway the E index and the E-I index are perfectly positively correlated, therefore using one or another leads to the same results. 5 We also tested the models with a dummy variable for each year: the results are very similar to the models with dummy variables for the three sub-periods.…”

“…The same database used for this analysis has been analysed in a previous study (D'AMORE et al, 2013), which has the same basic research question too (what kind of relationship exists between institutional and geographic distance?). The contribution provided by the present paper consists in the analysis of a longer period of time (the paper by D' AMORE et al, 2013AMORE et al, , analyses only the publications from 2003AMORE et al, -2005, so that it is also possible to observe the evolution of phenomena in a quite long period of time, and in the use and comparison of several measures of institutional distance.…”

“…Collaborations are important for biotechnology owing to the multidisciplinary profile of this sector: they involve multiple institutions of different kinds (Powell et al , 1999); they facilitate the flow of information between the participating organizations (Hazir and Autant-Bernard, 2014); and they allow access to external knowledge, which is an efficient way to achieve strategic competitiveness (Al-Laham et al , 2011). In addition, collaborations in biotechnology result in better products, more innovation and lower risk of development (Kamuriwo and Baden-Fuller, 2016) and the increase in knowledge flow from cooperation efforts may be an advantage for companies of this and other high-tech sectors (D’Amore et al , 2013).…”

“…SNA is considered an appropriate method to view the relationships between network participants, and has gained relevance in scientific articles (Su, 2017), with applications in several cases (Chen and Lin, 2016; D’Amore et al , 2013; Schiffauerova and Beaudry, 2012). In SNA, the network is a non-linear, decentralized, flexible, dynamic structure, with undefined boundaries, self-organizing, established through horizontal relations of cooperation (Borgatti and Halgin, 2011; Tomaél et al , 2006).…”

“…Institutional proximity between inventive agents can influence the knowledge diffusion process (Cantwell, 2000;Boschma, 2005;D'Amore et al, 2013). This perspective would suggest that organizations are more likely to recombine technologies produced by organizations that are bound to the same rules and norms.…”
