Research evolution in banking performance: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract: Banking performance has been regarded as a crucial factor of economic growth. Banks collect deposits from surplus and provide loans to the investors that contribute to the total economic growth. Recent development in the banking industry is channelling the funds and participating in economic activities directly. “…However, such expectations would be disappointed by the reality that the debates as to the definitions and dimensions of KBDCs continue to prevail. Moreover, the existing research in the field is still not empowered enough to recognize the most advanced concepts (hot spots) and the less established themes (blind spots) to uncover several ascriptions, such as unveiling emerging trends and discovering the intellectual edifice of KBDCs in the literature (Alam et al, 2021). These profound concerns establish a pressing need for the present study.…”

“…Literature documented two types of efficiency measurement approaches: non-parametric and parametric (Alam et al, 2021;Berger & DeYoung, 1997), with TE the commonly used measurement for the banking sector. Within the non-parametric approach, DEA, which is an efficiency frontier technique, is broadly used to measure banking performance (Alam et al, 2021).…”

“…Literature documented two types of efficiency measurement approaches: non-parametric and parametric (Alam et al, 2021;Berger & DeYoung, 1997), with TE the commonly used measurement for the banking sector. Within the non-parametric approach, DEA, which is an efficiency frontier technique, is broadly used to measure banking performance (Alam et al, 2021). For instance, DEA was applied to examine the efficiency of British commercial banks (Ouenniche & Carrales, 2018), banks in the USA (Kwon and Lee, 2015), and worldwide banking efficiency (Ahmad & Prentice, 2019;An et al, 2019;Banya & Biekpe, 2018;Chowdhury & Haron, 2021;Henriques et al, 2018;Kamarudin et al, 2019;Tamatam et al, 2019).…”

“…Therefore, we are concerned with identifying the current characteristics of performance articles in relation to business strategy using bibliometric analysis. "Bibliometric analysis is a popular and rigorous method for exploring and analysing large volumes of scientific data" (Donthu et al, 2021, p. 1;Alam et al, 2021). "The bibliometric methods to assess performance are generally divided into three types: review studies, evaluative approaches, and relational approaches.…”

“…The bibliometric analysis method was conducted on articles obtained from the Scopus database with the majority of the performance appraisal studies conducted in the medical sector. Alam et al (2021) performed a bibliometric analysis in the area of banking performance. The data for this analysis were from the Web of Science with the research time span of 1972-2021.…”
