Research Falling Out of Colorful Pages Onto Paper: Collage Inquiry

Abstract: As part of an advanced doctoral course on representing qualitative research, the authors used collage to represent either who they were as researcher or the research they were conducting. The authors, comprised of the course professor and seven doctoral students, read about collage as inquiry and research representation and then participated reflexively in a course lecture on the background of collage, a collage creation activity, a gallery walk, written and oral reflection on each other’s collages, a research… Show more

“…Poetic logic is a resource that amplifies the understanding of the human experience. The contributions of the researchers who work on this methodology have opened a path for the use of poetry to be an important resource to unveil characteristics that enhance the experience and skills of the populations with which they work (Borti, 2019;Cutts, 2018;Faulkner, 2018;Lahman et al, 2019;Lail & Lahman, 2019;Machado, 2018;McKnight et al, 2017;Moore, 2020;Pelias, 2019;Prendergast, 2017Prendergast, , 2019Weems, 2017).…”

“…In each area, I challenge both the course members and myself to represent research in ways that are not linear, that may be completely new to us, or that may be new within research and ours to create. In some of the courses, we have been able to publish our reflexive process (e.g., Lahman et al, 2018; Lahman, Taylor et al, 2019; Lahman, Teman, & Richard, 2019). Collage has been a favorite activity for all members of the courses—instructor and students alike.…”

“…In the collage, Still-Life With Chair Caning (Picasso, 1912), he glued oil cloth with a print of chair-cane pattern, newspaper, and a piece of rope circling the canvas. Drawing on the arts, collage research, has gained the attention of qualitative researchers (e.g., Butler-Kisber, 2008; Butler-Kisber & Poldma, 2010; Lahman, Taylor, et al, 2019; Leavy, 2015). Invigorating but still limited attention has been given to collage in research.…”
