Research integrity in clinical trials: innocent errors and spin versus scientific misconduct

Abstract: Purpose of reviewHigh-quality research underpins the best healthcare practice. This article focuses on analyzing the current literature to promote research integrity across clinical trials. Recent findingsRecent admissions of questionable practices by researchers have undermined practitioner and public confidence. There is limited evidence specifically for ethical and professional standards in clinical trials to guide researchers and institutions to embed integrity into research practice.

“…Our statement provides the agreed set of values and concepts concerning integrity of RCT. For guiding behaviour, each stakeholder organisation would need to prepare manuals with specifications of the conduct that must be adhered to when participating in and carrying out RCTs 45 . Hence, the principles summarised in our work serve as a basis for creating implementation plans, manuals, standards and policies at stakeholder institutions and organisations to help inculcate integrity in RCTs.…”

“…In this regard it is important to factually examine the retraction landscape. The current distribution of numbers of retracted clinical studies in the Retraction Watch Database 44 shows that the USA, Japan and China rank at the top, not Egypt (Figure 4). The consensus statement is useable by any interested party as it gives general guidance applicable in the RCT research discipline.…”

“…36 This requires a shift in focus from the ‘publish or perish’ mindset, where publication pressure is associated with a higher prevalence of questionable research practices, 37 to prioritising and institutionalising responsible research methodology and practice. 7,38 Further, journal editors and publishers have a responsibility to uphold integrity by ensuring that they only publish research that has been conducted in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines. 39 To achieve this, they should routinely screen manuscripts for integrity issues, 40 and we support arguments to require sharing of raw data prior to publication.…”
