Research Note—An Internet-Enabled Move to the Market in Logistics

Abstract: Logistics outsourcing has increased with the commercialization of the Internet, implying a reduction in the corresponding transaction costs. The Internet—with its universal connectivity and open standards—radically enhanced information technology (IT) capabilities, and we hypothesize this has reduced external transaction costs relatively more than internal governance costs. Using transaction cost theory as a lens, we examine whether the commercialization of the Internet coincided with a move to the market in l… Show more

“…We used real values instead of nominal values in the analysis. We obtained real values by multiplying the chain-type quantity indices by the nominal value in 2012, the baseline year (Han et al, 2011;Gong et al, 2016).…”

“…In this line of research, scholars show that internal governance costs, such as information processing costs, monitoring costs, and opportunity costs due to poor information, etc., might be reduced by digitization. For example, Gong, Nault, and Rahman (2016) find that in‐house operations become more efficient, and firms prefer the internal provision of solutions to external ones.…”

“…In a recent study, McElheran and Forman (2019) focus on the relationship between IT use and the vertical transfers within the firm and find that an increase in using the internet for external coordination is associated with a net shift toward market-based exchange. At the industry level, Gong et al (2016) provide empirical evidence that the Internet-enabled move to the market in the provision of logistics, suggesting the internet-enabled IT reduced external transaction costs relatively more than internal governance costs.…”

“…Estimation with main effects of hardware and software: Traditionally, hardware and software are integrated in production, and thus the IS discipline usually uses total information capital for the IT capital input when estimating a production function to examine the direct effect of IT on productivity (e.g., Cheng and Nault 2007, 2012, Han et al 2011b, Gong et al 2016. Following this tradition, we consider the direct effect of IT capital in production, and we also develop the interaction effects of hardware and software with intermediate inputs through a varying-coefficient model instead of simply adding the interaction terms about "HW × IntermediateInputs" and "SW × IntermediateInputs" in the estimation model.…”
