Research on a new omnidirectional mobile platform with heavy loading and flexible motion

Abstract: This article presents an omnidirectional mobile platform with six mecanum wheels, which provide better carrying capacity than traditional four-wheel platform. Omnidirectional mobile platform with six mecanum wheels can withstand heavier load than the omnidirectional mobile platform with four mecanum wheels, which was used to transport large equipments used in marine and aerospace. Due to the small size, omnidirectional mobile platform with six mecanum wheels move more flexibly and reach desired position and po… Show more

“…Incrementing the number of omnidirectional wheels can solve some stability problems, as shown in [1]. Moreover, the necessity of promoting the carrying and transportation capacity of the robot is also an important reason to increment the number of omnidirectional wheels [24]. A SAOWMR with only two omnidirectional wheels is still able to move from one configuration to another by breaking up the complex motion into pure rotation and pure translation.…”

“…To date, there is no system known to the authors that can provide such access from above for a higher number of mobile robotic units across the whole area of the shop floor. Traditional omnidirectional mobile platforms [7], [8], [9], [10], [11] operate on the ground. Gantry robots or linear axes are usually limited to a local environment while only supporting a limited number of manipulators as for example DLR's advanced multifunctional cell for aerospace carbonfiber-reinforced plastics production [12].…”

“…In the first group, the paper by Tian et al 7 presents an omnidirectional mobile platform with six mecanum wheels, positing that an omnidirectional mobile platform with six mecanum wheels is more flexible and can reach the desired position more easily in narrow workspaces. The kinematic model for this platform is constructed and verified using four kinds of motion state in the simulation.…”
