Research on Carbon Emissions of Electric Vehicles throughout the Life Cycle Assessment Taking into Vehicle Weight and Grid Mix Composition

Abstract: To study the impact of the promotion of electric vehicles on carbon emissions in China, the full life carbon emissions of electric vehicles are studied on the basis of considering such factors as vehicle weight and grid mix composition, and fuel vehicles are added for comparison. In this paper, we collect data for 34 domestic electric vehicles, and linear regression analysis is used to model the relationship between vehicle weight and energy consumption. Then, a Hybrid Life Cycle Assessment method is used to e… Show more

“…The drive cycle used within each study can impact the environmental performance of the vehicles being analyzed, as it defines the fuel/energy efficiency of the vehicles being studied, which, in turn, impacts the emissions associated with a vehicle's use phase. Around 50% of the reviewed studies either simply defined the efficiency and/or did not mention any form of drive cycle under which these efficiencies were tested [13,16,19,21,25,[27][28][29][30][31][32]. Around 30% used the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) [16,18,19,23,25,27].…”

“…As the proportion of clean energy in the grid mix composition increases, the benefits of electric vehicles for reducing CO 2 emissions will gradually emerge. 61 Bicer and Dincer carry out a comparative assessment of the life cycle of internal combustion vehicles fuelled by various fuels, ranging from hydrogen to gasoline, electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles also being considered for the study. The results of the study highlight that, among all the analyzed fuel/vehicle categories, the hydrogen vehicle is the best ecological option.…”

“…Li et al conducted in Reference 61 a research on EV carbon emissions during the whole life cycle. According to the analyzes carried out by the authors, it follows that the CO 2 emissions of EVs of the same weight class are 24% to 31% higher than those of conventional fuel vehicles, which is due to the current composition of the electricity grid mix in China.…”
