Research on ecosystem services in Brazil: a systematic review

Abstract: Studies using the ‘ecosystem services’ (ES) approach developed in Brazil based on the framework of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), and range from quantitative and qualitative evaluation to the development of economic instruments for payment for ecosystem services (PES) or compensation for their maintenance, mainly for hydrological services. In order to summarize current knowledge regarding ES, the structure for teaching in ES, and also to provide a basis for future research in Brazil, we carried out… Show more

“…A similar and complementary systematic map found a slightly different result, where provisioning services were most frequently studied (42%) [50]. The greater proportion of either regulating or provisioning services is a general trend in agroecology, and also more broadly, ecosystem services literature [127][128][129].…”

“…Furthermore, based on this new paradigm, the various techniques and practices for sustainable rangeland management and their implementation, are positioned in the reproduction of the socio-ecosystem. This has been championed in the sustainable agronomic techniques recommended by [62][63][64], in the socio-technical practices proposed by [58] and [24], and in the "payment for ecosystem services" [1,[65][66][67][68].…”

“…The decline in the supply of ecosystem services is problematic since the demand for them continues to grow in the face of population growth and the adoption of current consumption and production patterns (Dominati, Patterson & Mackay, 2010;Bennett, Peterson & Gordon, 2009). In response to this observation of degradation, in the last decades several institutions and researchers have directed efforts towards research in ecosystem services, seeking to promote the advancement of knowledge and the development of mechanisms capable of answering the main questions on the subject (Seppelt, Dormann, Eppink, Lautenbach, & Schmidt, 2011;Balvanera et al, 2012;McDonough, Hutchinson, Moore & Hutchinson, 2017;Jiang, 2017;Parron et al, 2019).…”
