SUMMARY Multichannel cooperative sensing (MCS) is an effective method for dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio networks. In contrast to most existing work on MCS that considered secondary users with homogeneous sensing ability, this paper studies the MCS problem for secondary users with heterogeneous sensing ability in terms of sensing accuracy. We further take into account different parameters of primary channels such as bandwidth, probability of being idle in each sensing period, and frequency selective fading at the sensing receiver. The MCS problem is formulated as a weapon target assignment problem, where more sensing resources are assigned to channels that are more valuable. This weapon target assignment problem is transformed to an integer generalized network flow problem with convex flow costs to obtain the lower bound solution, and then solved by the branch and bound algorithm with this bound to yield the exact scheme. To reduce computational complexity, a heuristic scheme is also proposed, which has approximate performance compared with the exact scheme. Finally, extensive simulation results for different scenarios illustrate the performance improvements of the proposed schemes over the existing scheme. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In recent years, there have been increased demands for aggregating sensor information from several sensors owing to the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, packet communication, which is a conventional multiple-access technology, is hindered by packet collisions owing to simultaneous access by sensors and waiting time to avoid packet collisions; this increases the aggregation time. The physical wireless parameter conversion sensor network (PhyC-SN) method, which transmits sensor information corresponding to the carrier wave frequency, facilitates the bulk collection of sensor information, thereby reducing the communication time and achieving a high aggregation success rate. However, when more than one sensor transmits the same frequency simultaneously, the estimation accuracy of the number of accessed sensors deteriorates significantly because of multipath fading. Thus, this study focuses on the phase fluctuation of the received signal caused by the frequency offset inherent to the sensor terminals. Consequently, a new feature for detecting collisions is proposed, which is a case in which two or more sensors transmit simultaneously. Furthermore, a method to identify the existence of 0, 1, 2, or more sensors is established. In addition, we demonstrate the effectiveness of PhyC-SNs in estimating the location of radio transmission sources by utilizing three patterns of 0, 1, and 2 or more transmitting sensors.

We study on the energy detection algorithm of spectrum sensing. The performance of energy detection in spectrum sensing is measured by the false alarm probability and the missing detection probability. In a certain spectrum sharing environment, whether the energy detection algorithm can meet our requirement is depending on the length of observation time and the decision threshold selected. Several experiment results have shown that: when the decision threshold is too low, it will cause much more false alarm; when the decision threshold is too high, it will bring many missing detection. Therefore, it is crucial that choosing an optimal decision threshold according to the length of observation time. In this paper, the closed-form solution of the minimum-cost decision threshold is deduced by using the methodology of mathematical derivation, and a new criterion about selecting an optimal decision threshold is also proposed. At last, the conclusion is proved by simulation.
