Research on Real-Time Supervisory System for Compaction Quality in Face Rockfill Dam Engineering

Abstract: Compaction quality control in filling construction is of great significance to the stability and durability of the face rockfill dam. The conventional method of quality control mainly relies on manual process control and inspection for a limited number of test holes, which cannot meet the high requirements of modern mechanized construction and schedule anymore, with increasing of scale of face rockfill dams. There is an urgent need to propose a new quality control method of face rockfill dams during the entire… Show more

“…Compaction quality monitoring systems (CQMSs) provide a new solution to the problems associated with conventional control methods [ 10 , 16 , 24 ], and a typical compaction quality monitoring system is shown in Figure 8 [ 24 ]. Studies on the CQMSs [ 18 , 103 ] have primarily focused on monitoring the compaction parameters [ 38 , 107 , 198 ] and the continuous detection of compaction quality [ 1 , 10 , 16 , 183 ]. With the development of technology and research, several typical CQMSs have matured, such as CCC/RICM/IC systems [ 3 , 15 , 21 , 22 , 29 , 30 ], compaction information management (CIM) systems [ 2 , 16 , 199 ], intelligent analysis (IA) systems [ 114 , 135 , 136 , 137 ], and post-processing systems [ 24 , 33 , 200 , 201 ].…”

“…According to the Specifcation for Rolled Earth-rockfll Dam Construction DT/L 5219-2013, the "double control" method, which combines the rolling control parameters (the thickness of paved materials and rolling times) with the postrolling sampling pit parameters (compactness, etc. ), is used to manage the compaction quality of rockfll dams [10]. In the feld construction of compaction quality testing, the test pit volume is measured by a human water-flling method [11].…”

“…Lv et al [15], considering compaction parameters, material properties, and their variability characteristics, proposed an evaluation approach of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD) compaction quality based on porosity and reliability. Wang et al [16] and Wang et al [17] established a compacting quality evaluation model by integrating intelligent optimization algorithm and neural network. Huang et al [18] developed a real-time construction quality supervising system for face rockfill dams to supervise the working surface's compaction parameters, which has been successfully applied in the construction of the concrete face rockfill dam of Shuibuya Hydropower Station.…”
