Research on the multi-level intake water temperature effect of the Yalong River Jinping-I hydropower project

Abstract: Based on the discussion of the multi-level intake application status of high dam reservoir, this paper takes the Jinping-I hydropower project reservoir in the Yalong River as an example, which is shaped by the highest 305 m high arch dam, and carries out the forecasting research on the reservoir temperature by numerical simulation and physical model testing. This paper studies the intake effect of withdrawing the surface warm water by the stoplog gates inlets and verifies the reliability of the mathematical mo… Show more

“…Remediating CWP is possible through a range of engineering and operational options (Sherman 2000;Michie et al 2020c). For example, multi-level outlets have been successful in mitigating thermal pollution (Du Xiaohu 2009;Wu et al 2011). Whereas retrofitting older dams may be costly (Sherman 2000), there are other infrastructure options such as trunnions, destratification mixers, bubble mixers and thermal curtains that divert warmer surface waters to low-level outlets (He et al 2017;Gray et al 2019;Michie et al 2020b).…”

“…The JSR and the YLR (the largest branch of the Jinsha River) are near the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and are both typical mountain rivers [16,17]. The spatial distribution of multi-year average precipitation in the upper reaches of the JSR is in the range of 30 to 1000 mm, and the water vapor content over the basin is less than 15 mm, which is relatively scarce [18,19]. The lowest annual average water temperature in the upper reaches of the JSR is 0.3 • C, with a short ice cover period.…”

“…At present, they are employed for water intake to achieve selective withdrawal and mitigate the outflow temperature problem in many hydropower projects, e.g., Jingping-I, Guangzhao, Baihetan, Nuozhadu, etc. [11]. In the vicinity of the water intake, a stop-log gate forces all released The water head loss ΔH (m), between Sections 1 and 3, is an essential parameter for evaluation of the water intake.…”
