Research on the Potential of Spherical Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Collecting Vibration Energy and Measuring Vibration

Abstract: The traditional downhole drilling vibration measurement methods which use cable or battery as power supplies increase the drilling costs and reduce the drilling efficiency. This paper proposes a spherical triboelectric nanogenerator, which shows the potential to collect the downhole vibration energy and measure the vibration frequency in a self-powered model. The power generation tests show that the output signal amplitude of the spherical triboelectric nanogenerator increases as the vibration frequency increa… Show more

“…TENGs' merits have been well documented, and comprise high efficiency, low cost, light weight, simple structure, biocompatibility, and wide-range of materials choices [ 67 – 77 ]. TENGs were successfully applied to harvest mechanical energy from sound [ 78 82 ], wind [ 83 90 ], water waves [ 91 96 ], and vibration [ 97 101 ]. Owing to their unique working mechanism and material usage, TENGs can be flexible [ 102 107 ], stretchable [ 108 115 ], humidity-proof [ 116 , 117 ], self-healing [ 118 120 ], shape-adaptive [ 121 123 ], and even washable [ 124 128 ].…”

“…13 As shown in Figure 1, 4 the power provided by the drilling rig is transmitted to the drill bit at the downhole through drill pipes to break rocks, and then the broken rocks are taken out of the downhole with the water flow by using mud pump, thereby realizing drilling. 4,5 The drill string (multiple drill pipes connected to form the drill string) vibration will inevitably occur due to the friction and collision between drill pipes and rocks, and excessive vibration will reduce drilling efficiency, damage drilling tools, increase drilling costs, and even cause drilling accidents, 3 , 6 so it is necessary to measure the downhole vibration in real-time.…”

“…In addition, with the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence technologies, rotational speed sensors will have broad applications. Scholars and enterprises have been focusing on developing new sensors characterized by low cost, ease of manufacturing, and reliable operation [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”
