The effective control of the plum fruit moth, Grapholita funebrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) still represents a difficult challenge for organic plum farming. Little information is available on the susceptibility of plum cultivars to this moth pest. We investigated the roles of several fruit parameters (i.e., shape, volume, hardness, fruit colour, and physiochemical properties) on the susceptibility of four different plum cultivars (Angeleno, Friar, President and Stanley) to G. funebrana attack. Field data demonstrated the importance of some fruit parameters (i.e., elongation index, sugar degree, titratable acidity, cover colour percentage) on susceptibility to G. funebrana infestation. Under laboratory conditions, colour and shape had a significant role in determining the time spent on false fruits, i.e., female moths preferred yellow and rounded fruits over elongated red or green fruits. Angeleno (yellow and rounded fruits) and Stanley (green and elongated fruits) were the most and least susceptible cultivars, respectively. Overall, this study adds useful knowledge about plum cultivar susceptibility to G. funebrana. Information reported here may be useful to improve integrated pest management strategies both in conventional and organic orchards because the use of less susceptible cultivars may reduce insecticidal treatments, limiting the development of resistance in target insects and the harmful side effects on beneficial species.Insects 2019, 10, 444 2 of 16 of the susceptibility of different plum cultivars to the main pests can provide useful information for plum improvement programs and pest management strategies.Grapholita funebrana Treitschke (Lepidoptera Tortricidae), the plum fruit moth (PFM), is one of the main pests of plum orchards in Europe. This species is oligophagous and attacks different host plants within the family Rosaceae, such as the fruits of plums, cherries, and peaches. This moth can complete one or two generations per year in many parts of central and eastern Europe [19] and three generations per year in Italy [20,21]. As with other moths, females of PFM attract mates using pheromone signals [22][23][24] and lay eggs on developing fruits of host plants [25]. Neonate larvae typically bore into immature fruits, where they feed and develop until pupation. Damage is due to the feeding activity of the larvae inside the fruits, which causes changes in fruit colouration, early ripening and fruit fall. Furthermore, infested fruits show penetration holes made by neonate larvae, which are characterised by the presence of gum, and exit holes made by mature larvae leaving the fruit [26]. Both result in reduced marketability and significant yield decreases. In conventional agriculture, this pest is primarily controlled by the use of broad-spectrum insecticides [19]. Athetis lepigone has been recorded in many countries in Europe and Asia, but it had never been documented as an agricultural pest until 2005. For the purpose of using the sex pheromone to control this pest, we conducted a study to identify the sex pheromone of A. lepigone by gas chromatography with an electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) and GC coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. Three pheromone candidates were detected by GC-EAD analysis in the extracts of the female sex pheromone gland, and two candidates were identified as (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:OAc) and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc) in a ratio of 1:5 by mass spectral analysis of natural pheromone components and dimethyl disulphide adducts. In the field male trapping test, the traps baited with the binary blend captured high number of males, while traps with single component hardly caught males, indicating that the two components are essential for the male attractiveness. In addition, the optimum ratios of Z7-12:OAc and Z9-14:OAc were determined as 3:7-7:3, and the best doses for the binary blend (at ratio of 3:7 between Z7-12:OAc and Z9-14:OAc) were 0.25-0.5 mg/trap, based on the number of male catches. The identification of a highly attractive sex pheromone will help in developing efficient strategies for monitoring and control of A. lepigone. The response of Grapholita molesta (Busck) males to three-component sex pheromone blends containing a 100% ratio of the major sex pheromone component, (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate and a 10% ratio of (Z)-8-dodecenol, but with varying ratios of (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate (0.4, 5.4, 10.4, 30.4, and 100.1% E-blends) was tested with populations in eight stone and pome fruit orchards in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Traps baited with the 5.4% E-blend caught significantly more males than traps with any other blend with all populations. Significantly more males were caught in traps baited with the 10.4% E-blend than in traps with the remaining blends, except with the 0.4% E-blend in Turkey. Significant differences in male moth catches occurred between the other blends with the 0.4>30.4% E-blend, and the 30.4>100.1% E-blend. Male moth catches with the 100.1% E-blend only differed from the hexane control in Chile. No apparent differences were noted to these blends in populations collected from pome or stone fruits. Flight tunnel assays to synthetic blends with a subset of populations were similar to the field results, but the breadth of the most attractive E-blends was wider. Flight tunnel assays also demonstrated a high level of male-female cross-attraction among field-collected populations. Female gland extracts from field-collected populations did not show any significant variation in their three-component blends. The only exceptions in these assays were that long-term laboratory populations were less responsive and attractive, and produced different blend ratios of the two minor components than recently collected field populations.
