Research Outputs as Vehicles of Knowledge Exchange in a Quintuple Helix Context: The Case of Biofuels Research Outputs

Abstract: In this study, we draw on Triple/Quadruple/Quintuple Helix theory to analyze differences in perceptions of research outputs between researchers and users in the context of advanced biofuels researcha research environment heavily shaped by social and environmental forces. We present results based on qualitative empirical analysis, presenting the responses of both researchers and research users with regards to the uses of research outputs, users' access to them, and the quality of research outputs. Results show … Show more

“…It creates a synergy among economy, society, and democracy. It is also argued by Alhassan et al (2017) that natural environment has a relationship with the existing four helices as it impacts and shapes the direction of innovation and knowledge activities. According to Kolehmainen et al (2015), knowledge-based development can be quite challenging especially in less economically developed areas.…”

“…Perspective in which the natural environment is decisive for sustainable development capable of strengthening natural capital (flora, fauna, biodiversity, water resources, etc.). Although not typically conceptualized as an actor, the natural environment is in a similar relationship to the four helices, as humans are impacted by the natural environment and modify it in the course of knowledge generation and innovation activities (Alhassan et al, 2019).…”

“…Carayannis et al (2012) argued that the environment is now considered in the innovation ecosystem, appearing as the fifth helix. It is assumed that human beings are impacted by the natural environment but are not passive insofar as they interfere with the course of activities involving knowledge and innovation (Alhassan et al, 2019).…”

“…Além da inclusão da sociedade/público como agente ativo no desenvolvimento regional (quarta hélice), a partir do trabalho assinado por Carayannis et al (2012), o meio ambiente passa a ser considerado no ecossistema de inovação, figurando a quinta hélice. Parte-se do princípio que os seres humanos são impactados pelo ambiente natural, mas não são passivos na medida em que interferem sobre o curso das atividades que envolvem conhecimento e inovação (Alhassan et al, 2019).…”
