Research Progress of Probiotic Therapy to Prevent Caries

Abstract

Caries is a kind of chronic progressive destructive disease of dental hard tissue caused by bacteria. The occurrence of caries is believed to be related to the imbalance of oral bacteria (biofilms). When acid-producing or acid-resistant bacteria of resident oral bacteria gain selective ecological advantages over other species, the homeostasis of plaque biofilms will be destroyed and the disease will be caused. Probiotics is a kind of beneficial microbes to human body health, can regulate the micro ecological balance and has larger potential methods. In this paper, the research progress of probiotics in preventing caries was reviewed, including caries and oral microecology, probiotics and carriers, potential of probiotics in preventing caries, probiotics combined with prebiotics, advantages and disadvantages of probiotics, in order to provide relevant basis and significance for the clinical application and research of probiotics in preventing caries.
