Research Progress on Nidus Vespae, a Traditional Chinese Medicine Derived From Insects

Abstract: Nidus vespae is a drug derived from insects that is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). No systematic review has previously been made about this drug. This paper summarizes previous investigations about the 49 identified chemical constituents and clinical application of Nidus vespae, and explores its pharmacological mechanism of treating disease. “…However, especially in East Asia, social wasps are bioresources that have been utilized for medicinal and food purpose for a long time. In Korea and China, nests of social wasps (Nidus vespae) have been used as an ingredient of crude drugs [5,6], or an ingredient of health-promoting traditional liquors [5]. The entomophagic records about wasps are mostly related to consumption of larvae, which are available in Papua New Guinea [7], China [8] and Laos [9].…”

“…Of course, deaths and damage to apiaries are caused by Vespa spp., but over half of nest removals involve Polistes spp., and social wasps are seriously detested regardless of the species (Choi et al, ). Social wasps are also beneficial, with some acting as pollinators (Hallett, Mitchell, Chamberlain, & Karron, ; Rewicz, Jaskuła, Rewicz, & Tończyk, ; Vieira & Shepherd, ) and others providing useful substances in their venom or saliva (Shinozaki & Abe, ; Wang, Zhang, Gao, Wu, & Zhao, ). One of the most important functions of social wasps in the ecosystem is as an apex predator controlling outbreaks of pests.…”
