Research Progresses of Flash Evaporation in Aerospace Applications

Abstract: Liquid is overheated and evaporated quickly when it enters into the environment with lower saturation pressure than that corresponding to its initial temperature. This phenomenon is known as the flash evaporation. A natural low-pressure environment and flash evaporation have unique characteristics and superiority in high altitude and outer space. Therefore, flash evaporation is widely used in aerospace. In this paper, spray flash evaporation and jet flash evaporation which are two different forms were introduc… Show more

“…The flash evaporation process involves intense heat transfer and phase change, resulting in high heat flow density, quick evaporation speed, and full utilization of the work material's latent heat. This technique has been widely used in several sectors, including spacecraft cooling [2], pharmaceutical drying [3], electronic components [4], and saltwater desalination [5]. Because of the low natural pressures in the areas where it is utilized, flash vaporization technology has attracted a lot of interest, especially in aircraft applications.…”

“…This is referred to as an EHD extraction phenomenon (EHD-EP) [17,18], which is the target of the present research from a viewpoint of the condensation heat transfer enhancement, flash evaporation, moisture control in liquids etc. [19][20][21]. The electrode configuration used in this study does not have any sharp edges and the behavior of liquid is opposite to the motion of the above-mentioned Taylor cone-jet.…”

“…Flashing flows are encountered in a variety of technical applications, having both beneficial and harmful impacts. Owing to its high heat removal capacity and unique advantages under vacuum conditions, flash evaporation is increasingly used as an alternative cooling method, e.g., in the spacecraft thermal control systems [2][3][4]. High-pressure liquid is sprayed into a low-pressure environment, and flash evaporation takes place.…”
