Research strategies for mechanised production of rice in transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture: a case study from Khammouan in Lao PDR

Abstract: Mechanised rice production has started to take place in response to rural labour shortage and increased labour cost in Khammouan province in central Laos where subsistence rice production is being replaced with commercial agriculture. This paper summarizes the results of recent findings of four mechanised items, combine harvester, seed drill, transplanter, and artificial grain dryer, and discusses research strategies for advancement of the mechanised rice production system. Combine and seed drill were consider… Show more

“…While much more expensive, some large mills have started to install high capacity vertical dryers where about 25 t of rough rice could be dried overnight. The number of these dryers in Central Lao province of Khammouane increased from 1 to 4 between 2015 and 2017 (Fukai et al, 2019).…”

“…Some farmers have recently amalgamated fields to produce larger size fields, realizing that larger fields are more efficient for various machinery operations including combine harvester in the field. Khammouan Provincial Government has recently promoted the field amalgamation by providing credits, and this some farmers are taking advantage of the Government scheme (Fukai et al, 2019).…”

“…In the analysis shown in Table 6, the cost for hiring tray was small as the groups had already owned most trays required, but extra cost would need to be factored in further for the estimation of the economic benefit of adopting mechanised transplanting. Because of the rather high total cost, transplanter would be more suitable for production of high value crops such as seed rice, the advantages and disadvantages are summarised in Fukai et al (2019).…”

“…The seed drill appears promising as long as the planting condition is favourable, the advantages and disadvantages are summarised in Fukai et al (2019). Table 7 shows clearly that adopting a drill contracting service is an attractive option for farmers who are not satisfied with the performance of crops established from broadcasting such as weedy fields or uneven establishment.…”
