Researches on Coprophilous Fungi

Abstract: With Plates XVII and XVnX T TNTIL recently the systematic side of Mycology has y-J received most attention in Britain, a fact which probably accounts for the absence of any specific work on Coprophilous or dung-borne Fungi, many of which, as the species of Gymnoascus, Thelebolus, Microascus, &c, on account of being the most primitive representatives of their respective groups, are perhaps more interesting from a morphological than a purely systematic standpoint. A second reason may lie in the fact that many of… Show more

“…Gymnoascus dankaliensis has been isolated by us (unpublished data) from domestic herbivore dung, and by others (Kuehn and Orr 1959;Mirza and Nasir 1968;Currah 1985;Valldosera and Guarro 1988;Elshafie 2005) from any kind of faecal material. G. reessii, G. ruber, and G. uncinatus Eidam were also noticed on any kind of dung (Baranetzky 1872;van Tieghem 1877;Schroeter 1893;Massee 1895;Massee andSalmon 1901, 1902;Orr et al 1963b;Apinis 1964;Kuehn 1959;Tóth 1967;Seth 1968;Valldosera and Guarro 1984;Currah 1985;Schavey 1999;Doveri 2006;Piontelli et al 2006;Richardson 2008a, b), while G. devroeyi was recorded from several types of noncarnivore dung (Orr 1977;Currah 1985;our unpublished data), and G. littoralis was observed by us (unpublished data) on omnivore (badger) dung. The weakly keratinolytic Ajellomyces griseus (Currah & Locq.-Lin.…”

“…Several macroscopic and microscopic pictures were observed to corroborate the identity from the specimen. In the original protologue, Massee and Salmon (1901) mentioned cylindrical asci, 110-113 × 13-15 μm, versus narrow clavate in the illustration, and 2-celled, ellipsoidal ('oblongis utrinque rotundatis') spores, 15-19 × 5 μm. Unfortunately, due to the dehiscent nature of the asci and the scarce material available, these structures were not observed in this study.…”

“…From the taxonomic point of view they mainly belong to several families of Pezizales and Agaricales. The literature referring to the taxonomic problems of this fungal group is rather rich (Boudier 1869, Massee and Salmon 1901, 1902, Lange 1952, Brummelen 1967, Kimbrough 1965, 1969, Eckblad 1968, Larsen 1970. Many publications have a floristic character (Chelchowski 1892, Moravec 1968, Binyamini 1972, Kalamees 1980.…”
