Due to the political decision to synchronize the Baltic power system (BPS) with Continental Europe, the BPS will become a weakly interconnected system occasionally working in island mode and with rapidly diminishing system inertia levels. A novel, predictive, rapid load shedding (LS) method/scheme is proposed to tackle the challenges caused by BPS synchronization. The proposed novel LS scheme is based on using synchronous condensers as frequency/ROCOF sensors and will help to stabilize the grid frequency during major loss-of-generation contingencies.
