Reservoir Simulation of CO2 Storage Using Compositional Flow Model for Geological Formations in Frio Field and Precaspian Basin

Abstract: CO2 storage is a greenhouse gas mitigation instrument for many countries. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of CO2 storage in the region of the Precaspian basin using the compositional flow model that was verified by the data of the Frio pilot project, USA. We use local grid refinement in the commercial reservoir simulator. In the reservoir simulation for data of the Frio Pilot project, we have achieved a good history matching of well pressure. Different scenarios were tested, and post-injection mi… Show more

“…where p s H 2 O is the water saturation pressure in kPa at a specific temperature T in K; T r,H 2 O is the reduced temperature of water defined by the ratio of the given temperature T in K and the critical temperature of water T c,H 2 O in K, equal to 647.14 K: T r,H 2 O = T T c,H 2 O = T 647.14 . Thereby, we calculated the saturation pressure of water with the correlation by Saul and Wagner [28], shown in Equation (2).…”

“…Studies on CO 2 sequestration have been in place since the 20th century [1] but have now received global attention from researchers, scientists, and engineers working towards a net zero carbon emissions goal. Several countries from around the world are recognizing the viable role of CO 2 sequestration in climate change mitigation, including but not limited to the US, UK, China, and Norway [2].…”

“…Specifically, the local grid refinement (LGR) approach, 23 has enabled simulations of real-world three-dimensional (3D) CO 2 storage projects, where the fine-grid responses capture the plume migration while the coarser grid responses capture the far-field pressure buildup. [24][25][26] However, even with non-uniform grid approaches, these numerical models are still too expensive to be used for essential tasks such as site selection, 27 optimization, 28,29 and inversion. 30 These tasks often require thousands of forward simulations; however, each simulation could take hours to complete (see reference statistics in ESI, † Table S6).…”
