Britain in Bloom is a UK national campaign to help people improve their local environment through gardening, a popular and accessible pastime. This research presents a framework to understand the relationships between gardeners and their front gardens (yards). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of focus group data with 20 Britain in Bloom gardeners in Greater London explores: why people garden in front gardens; how social cohesion may emerge from front gardening activities; and the health benefits of the presence of front gardens for residents and passers-by. Front gardens played a key role in supporting participants' personal identity and self-expression. Maintaining a front garden was seen as making a positive and satisfying contribution to their local area and to others' pleasure. Social cohesion in the street or neighbourhood occurred through informal verbal communication and knowledge-sharing. These findings are relevant to the impacts of front gardens and community greening initiatives in private spaces.

Periurban Streetscape—Vernacular Front Gardens and Their Potential to Provide Ecosystem Services: A Case Study of Warsaw, Poland

At the time of reflection on green justice, when the role of public green spaces is increasing, it is worth paying attention to vernacular greenery, especially in single-family residential areas on city outskirts which property owners arrange in front parts of plots. The paper’s aim is to show that vernacular front gardens (VFG) can act as missing public space and at the same time have the attributes of public green space, providing ecosystem services (ES). In order to confirm these assumptions, we carried out a VFG’s attributes inventory and a survey on garden designers. We identified dominating garden features and conducted a cluster analysis of the gardens based on their characteristics. The basis for building periurban streetscape in single-family housing estates is the visual inclusiveness of VFGs. They provide all the ES groups, playing representational, natural and recreational roles as well as serving as locations of edible plants production. Streets in residential sites, thanks to VFG, can be treated as real green public spaces creating a type of green area accessible not only to owners but also to pedestrian eyes. We conclude that our results can be valuable for city planning but also for the professional garden designers.

In this paper, the deep generative model and stochastic backpropagation method are used to innovate the modern landscape garden design, and at the same time, traditional cultural elements are integrated in the design process. By constructing generative adversarial networks and utilizing diffusion models, this study improves the diversity of design samples and enhances the display of cultural flavor. The comprehensive evaluation test shows that the modern landscape garden integrating traditional cultural elements exceeds the mean value in 17 evaluation indexes, especially the value of the evaluation factor of artistic flavor display reaches 0.0476, which is 460% higher than the mean value. The survey of tourists shows that the overall evaluation score of modern landscape garden is 76.4015, and the evaluation grade reaches “good”, which effectively verifies the practicality and effect of the design method of this paper.
