Residential Tourism, Swimming Pools, and Water Demand in the Western Mediterranean

Abstract: Many Mediterranean areas have recently witnessed a proliferation of new urban and tourist-related features following lowdensity residential patterns that contrast with the traditional high-density urban typologies of Mediterranean cities. “…This rise in water consumption can be explained by the increase in homes and population numbers recorded for this coastal region, which is linked to the growth of tourism, as well as residential and service activities [2,3]. To a great extent, the increase in the urban and residential surface area is based on expansive urbanization and the creation of new urban spaces, such as gardens and swimming pools [4,5]. This process is typical of the majority of the Mediterranean coastline in France, Italy [6], and Spain, including the Balearic Islands [7] and the Costa del Sol [8].…”

“…The intense development of the Spanish Mediterranean coast since the 1960s, and especially during the real estate bubble of the 1990s and 2000s, has resulted in the creation of new, rapidly growing urban natures (gardens and swimming pools) highly dependent on water [45]. In the coast of Alicante the urban area in 1978 was 49,904,151 m 2 , while in 2013, it had risen to 221,965,736 m 2 [43].…”
