“Residual” mammary carcinoma following simulated partial mastectomy

Abstract: Treatment of mammary carcinoma by partial mastectomy rather than by total mastectomy and axillary dissection may diminish the chances of long-term cure by risking incomplete removal of all local carcinoma at the initial operation. This study was undertaken to determine by pathologic examination how often carcinoma might remain in the breast and axilla after partial mastectomy. The operation was simulated in 203 mastectomy specimens after operations for unilateral invasive carcinoma. In so far as could be deter… Show more

“…It is likely that additional malignant disease also occurred in the non-MRI group. This assumption is supported by studies that reported more extensive disease in diverse groups of breast tumors [7,[32][33][34][35]. Consequently, a considerable part of undetected multi-focal tumor may be controlled by adjuvant treatment such as radiotherapy.…”

“…Many studies have investigated the multicentric nature of breast cancer (Qualheim, 1957;Gallager, 1969;Hutter, 1971;Shah et al, 1973;Rosen et al, 1975;Lagios, 1977;WestmanNaeser et al, 1981;Sarnelli, 1986;Spinelli et al, 1992;Anastassiades et al, 1993). Although some of these studies (Gallager, 1969;Hutter, 1971;Lagios, 1977) used radiography, it was Egan (Egan et al, 1969;Egan, 1982) who standardised the 'correlated pathological-radiological' method of whole-organ analysis, which provides optimum sampling of breast tissue.…”

“…Few studies have systematically addressed the extent of foci of premalignant and malignant disease in the breast after lumpectomy [5,6]. It has been shown that around 40% of the cases had no other foci in the breast of pre-malignancy/malignancy, thus 60% of the cases had residual foci.…”
