One strain of microorganisms was isolated from soil previously treated with pendimethalin using enrichment technique and identified using 16S rDNA as Pseudomonas putida (E15). The effect of pH and temperature on the growth ability of the tested strain was investigated. The results show that the optimum pH and temperature for the growth of pendimethalin dissipating strain were 7 and 30°C, respectively. P. putida was used to dissipate pendimethalin from mineral liquid medium with half-live of 5.46 days. Pendimethalin half-live was 51.9 days in untreated mineral liquid medium. P. putida and compost were also evaluated for detoxification of pendimethalin in clay soil. P. putida and compost were effective in pendimethalin dissipation in soil with half-live of 4.67 and 5 days, respectively. Pendimethalin half-live was 62.43 days in untreated soil. Pendimethalin treatment affected analysis of the microbial population growing in P. putida or compost treating soil leachates showed an overall increase in the population of microorganisms. There is no toxicity of pendimethalin detected in soil on cucumber plants after treatment with P. putida or compost. Pendimethalin significantly decreased germination and increased cucumber seedlings mortality rate. P. putida and compost treatments increased the growth parameters. Moreover, no significant difference was observed in the most growth parameters between P. putida and compost treatments. Abnormal development of xylem tissue was observed in pendimethalin contaminated soil as a result of phytotoxicity. The results suggest that bioremediation by P. putida and compost was considered to be effective method for detoxification of pendimethalin in soil.

Abstract:The influence of soil microorganisms, biofertilizer and compost fertilization on the persistence of the two organphosphorus insecticides, chlorpyrifos, ethoprophos and carbamate insecticide, carbofuran were studied under semifield experimental conditions.Residue analysis of the initial samples of the three applied pesticides, chlorpyrifos, ethoprophos and carbofuran was relatively high (68.3, 76.0 and 80.9 ppm, respectively) in uncultivated, unfertilized and unsterilized soil. These amounts were decreased to 10.12, 14.6 and 12.0 ppm showing 85.18, 80.79 and 85.17% loss, respectively at 6 weeks after treatments. The initial deposits of these pesticides in potato cultivated soils (control) were 70.77, 74.17 and 81.17 ppm, respectively, graduate dissipation of tested pesticides was noticed through the successive intervals. At the end of the experimental period, residues detected revealed 93.0, 91.5 and 94.37% loss, respectively.Addition of certain bioactive (microbal and compost ) amendments was able to induce the pesticide degradation in the contaminated soil (the highest degradation levels was noticed in biofertilized soil, > 99.99, 99.33 and 96.11%). On the other hands, obtained data clearly showed that microorganisms living in soil play role in pesticide biodegradation. In other words, the percentages of loss of chlorpyrifos, ethoprophos and carbofuran residues were 86.35, 83.91 and 82.32% in sterilized soils, respectively, at 6 weeks after treatments. Obtained data indicated also, the residual values of tested insecticides on or in potato tubers were more than the maximum residue limits (MRL) in all treatments, this means that the tested insecticides have a translocation and accumulating properties in potato tubers.

Induced degradation of Malathion in aqueous solutions with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), using ultraviolet irradiation (UV), ozonation and chemical oxidation using (sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, monochloride-isocyanuric acid (MCICA), dichloroisocyanuric acid (DCICA), trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCICA) was studied. Malathion and its degradation products were extracted using solid phase extraction (SPE) method, identified using GC-MS. Results showed that the degradation of malathion in aqueous solutions followed the first order reaction, and its half life was 2.37, 4.53, 6.64 and 8.84h under ozonation, UV, 1.5%TCICA and 1.5% DCICA, respectively when malathion solutions treated for 12 h. The concentrations of chemical oxidative substances, active chlorine content and time of treatments had a significant effect on degradation rate of Malathion, which increased with increasing of each. The most enhancement of Malathion degradation was observed in treatment with ozonation, UV, TCICA and DCICA where the dissipations % of the parent compounds were 96, 68.43, 47 and 40.14 %, respectively. The intermediates products of Malathion degradation using chemical method were identified as O, O-dimethyl hydrogen phosphorothioate (DMHP) and diethyl succinate. UV leads to formation of dimethyl phosphate (DMP), diethyl succinate and malaoxon. Ozonation leads to formation of phosphorothioic acid, O, O, S-trimethyl ester (PSA), 2-mercapto-succinic acid diethyl ester (MSA) and malaoxon.
