Residues of Organochlorine Pesticides in Fish from the Gomti River, India

Abstract: This study reports the levels and distribution patterns of some organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in fish samples of the Gomti river, India, collected from three sites. In the fish muscles Sigma OCPs ranged between 2.58-22.56 ng g(-1) (mean value: 9.66 +/- 5.60 ng g(-1)). Neither spatial nor temporal trends could be observed in distribution of the OCPs. Aldrin was the predominant OCP, whereas, HCB and methoxychlor could not be detected. alpha-HCH and beta-HCH among the isomers of HCH and pp-DDE among the metabo… Show more

“…[37] DDT was recorded in Saudi Arabic groundwater at 1.07 × 10 5 ng L −1 in Gazan, while DDE at 5.6 × 10 3 ng L −1 in Wadi Al-Dawaser and 9 × 10 4 ng L −1 in Gazan. [38] Our results were also compared to those reported by Zhou et al [39] and DDE was found to dominate DDT family in surface water of Qiantang River. The observed concentrations of DDTs were the highest in summer-autumn period similar to ours; however, our concentrations are much higher.…”

“…HCH residues at many of the sites have percolated into the soil and thence contaminated groundwater (145). Residues of HCH isomers have now been reported for many countries in samples of air (76,79,138), water (8,71,139), soil (29,50,71,139,144), food commodities (7,17,175,184), milk (153,197), fish (44,87), and mammals (48) and even from human blood samples (15,169) and adipose tissue (14,73). Environmental residues from sites as remote from the major regions of production and use as the Arctic, Antarctic, and Pacific Ocean have been reported (63,185).…”
