Resilience of adolescents in physical activity during the covid-19 pandemic: a preliminary case study in France

Abstract: Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine how adolescents' physical activity (PA) changed during the COVID-19 crisis according to level of intensity and whether there are typologies of resilience based on individual and environmental characteristics. Methods: A longitudinal follow-up study of PA in a representative sample of French adolescents (n=808, 16.32±1.01 years old) was carried out. Two online surveys collecting reported data on amounts of PA were completed the week before and during the first… Show more

“…This finding strongly suggests that all active students were attracted to using PM and made use of teaching sessions as an opportunity to undertake PA during the day. This idea corroborates findings of Derigny et al (2022) showing that, under normal living conditions outside of a lockdown lifestyle, most active adolescents seized more opportunities to engage in PA.…”

“…These results seemed to reinforce the need for the construction of a substantive, positive relationship, even at a distance, between teachers and students. Several other studies have investigated PE teachers' key pedagogical principles for remote learning to improve students' engagement in PA during lockdown, such as providing online feedback, choices of sports for participation and social support from parents/caregivers at home (Derigny et al, 2022;Gobbi et al, 2020;Istenič, 2021a;Rivera-Vargas et al, 2021).…”

“…periods of sickness). According to the time spent in MVPA per day, collected by accelerometers, participants were categorized into a PA profile [ 17 , 18 ]: Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) active adolescents spent at least 60 minutes in MVPA per day, minimally active adolescents spent between 30 and 60 minutes and inactive adolescents spent less than 30 minutes in MVPA per day.

“…The chronosystem has been conceptualized as including these five systems, following an evolution of pre-defined sequences throughout life, but without investigating temporal opportunities [ 14 ]. Several studies have focused on an individual’s ecological determinants, showing that adolescents invested MVPA differently, depending on their activity level profile [ 17 , 18 ], body mass index (BMI) [ 19 ] and gender [ 20 ]. However, the holistic structure of the model requires the need to consider the relationship between individual, environmental, and chronological determinants, adopting a perception of time [ 21 ] which views specific occasions as providing opportunities (affordances) for engaging in MVPA.…”

“…Basing our work on the available literary sources [ 18 , 19 ], in order to analyze the responses we conducted an analysis of the k-average cluster by recommending a 2-cluster solution. All the clusters were identified in our set of data as follows: meaningfulness, and state of anxiety.…”
