Resilience of the Natural Phyllosphere Microbiota of the Grapevine to Chemical and Biological Pesticides

Abstract: The phyllosphere is colonized by complex microbial communities, which are adapted to the harsh habitat. Although the role and ecology of nonpathogenic microorganisms of the phyllosphere are only partially understood, leaf microbiota could have a beneficial role in plant growth and health. Pesticides and biocontrol agents are frequently applied to grapevines, but the impact on nontarget microorganisms of the phyllosphere has been marginally considered. In this study, we investigated the effect of a chemical fun… Show more

“…First studies were only focused on bacteria through 16S rDNA sequencing, while more recent studies also include fungal screening (Perazzolli et al, 2014;Sylla et al, 2013). Knowing the role of fungi in plant health and productivity, the simultaneous analysis of bacterial and fungal communities can now be considered as mandatory for any plant microbiome study focused on biocontrol agents and/or plant pathogens.…”

“…The same genomic region was also targeted by Perazzolli et al [24] in a study of leaf microbiota, that resulted in identification of beneficial microbial communities that could be used as a tool for crop protection. In the same manner, in the past years other researchers have been focusing on other domains for classification purposes.…”

“…However, microbial properties in complex consortia often differ from those of their single components [19]. In particular, biocontrol agents should compete with indigenous communities to occupy niches and show appropriate biocontrol properties against the target pathogens [20]. Introduction of T. atroviride changes the microbial structure of the soil microflora during the first two weeks following inoculation [21], suggesting strong interaction between this biocontrol strain and indigenous microbial communities.…”
