Resin Transfer Moldable Fluorinated Phenylethynyl-Terminated Imide Oligomers with High Tg: Structure–Melt Stability Relationship

Abstract: Phenylethynyl-terminated aromatic polyimides meet requirements of resin transfer molding (RTM) and exhibits high glass transition temperature (Tg) were prepared. Moreover, the relationship between the polyimide backbones structure and their melting stability was investigated. The phenylethynyl-terminated polyimides were based on 4,4’-(hexafluorosiopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and different diamines of 3,4’-oxydianiline (3,4’-ODA), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA) and 2,2’-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (T… Show more

“…Overall, TMR–50/RDm–a–5 showed the best combined mechanical properties with the tensile strength of 84.0 MPa, tensile modulus of 2.4 GPa, elongation at breakage of 4.1%, the flexural strength of 169.2 MPa, and flexural modulus of 3.5 GPa, respectively. This result also agreed with the reaction mechanism of the PEPA which was mainly by chain extension rather than cyclization [ 44 , 45 ]. So we next compounded this system with T700 carbon fiber to prepare polyimide based carbon fiber composites.…”

“…Apparently, the second transitions were due to the alkynyl crosslinking reactions. It is worth noticing that current METI polymers exhibited crosslinking temperatures (T c ) in the range of 280–320 °C, which is nearly 70 °C lower than that of the conventional phenylethynyl (C 6 H 4 –C≡C–C 6 H 4 ) crosslinker [ 36 ]. This would undoubtedly expand the applications of “low-temperature” curable alkynyl-terminated PIs.…”

“…A survey of all of the PAIs by DSC revealed no endothermic peaks associated with the melting or glass transition in temperatures up to 400 °C ( Figure 6 , Figure S6 –S8). The absence of phase transition of the PAIs stems from their highly rigid structure of which stiff biphenyl units are solely connected by strong amide and imide linkages [ 29 , 30 ].…”
