Resistance and Balance Training Improves Functional Capacity in Very Old Participants Attending Cardiac Rehabilitation After Coronary Bypass Surgery

Abstract: There were significant improvements in all measured variables in very old adults participating in CR soon after CABG. With additional functional exercise training, participants randomized to IG improved significantly more than those randomized to CG on 6-MWD, TUG time, and relative workload.

“…This result is particularly relevant in view of the fact that a 17% increase in peak aerobic capacity after 3 months of exercise training was reported in a group of individuals after an acute coronary event or cardiac surgical intervention much younger (61 ± 11) than the current study cohort . The current findings are consistent with those reported in a previous study that obtained a 13.5% increase in 6MWT distance and a 16.2% increase in VO 2 peak in older adults with a 3‐week CR program after cardiac surgery.…”

“…The improvements in exercise tolerance, endurance, and muscle strength obtained in a population with a mean age of 80 are consistent with those of a recent study demonstrating improved functional capacity after cardiac surgery in participants aged 80 and older in whom routine CR was integrated with resistance and balance training.…”
