Resistance and Seakeeping Investigation for Optimization of the Floating Hull of Wave Glider

Abstract: Wave glider is the first unmanned autonomous marine robot to use only the ocean's endless supply of wave energy for propulsion. Wave glider comprises fin system, tether and float which harvest all of its energy from waves and sun to produce forward thrust. As a consequence of the lack of design information and data for the wave glider, the main aim of the study is using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to present a method to predict calm water resistance for the floating hull through calculations of 3 diff… Show more

“…In our work, the suitable mesh production is combined with the development of the hull geometry as the solution. Figure 5 and Figure 6 depict the locations of the ship models in relation to the different limits of the solution domain as well as an overall view of the mesh surrounding the ship model [18]. For the flow computations, half of the new model according to the hull symmetry was employed.…”

“…The arrows on the domain's left (inlet) side indicate the flow direction [14].The finite volume method was used in this study to discretize the domain into a set of adjoining cells. Furthermore, a fixed mesh method was used, in which it is assumed that the fluid moves at the same speed as the ship model, where the ship model is static [15]. Figure 9 depicts perspective views of the domain as well as slice views of the refinement areas.…”

“…Maxsurf is a naval architecture software that provides integrated tools for hull modeling, stability, motions and resistance prediction as well as structural modeling. This software is a well-known numerical tool for ship analysis [53][54][55][56][57] that also used in recent ship optimization studies [58][59][60]. This software was also used in previous studies of the authors.…”
