Resistance of bacterial biofilms to disinfectants: a review

Abstract: A biofilm can be defined as a community of microorganisms adhering to a surface and surrounded by a complex matrix of extrapolymeric substances. It is now generally accepted that the biofilm growth mode induces microbial resistance to disinfection that can lead to substantial economic and health concerns. Although the precise origin of such resistance remains unclear, different studies have shown that it is a multifactorial process involving the spatial organization of the biofilm. This review will discuss the… Show more

“…An immediate application of swimmer-induced channels is to facilitate access to currently used surface disinfectants, such as oxidizing agents or quaternary ammonium compounds. Compared with planktonic cells, bacteria embedded in biofilms are typically 10-to 1,000-fold more resistant to these products (4,26). Improved biocide efficacy against staphylococci in the presence of bacilli opens the door to novel treatment strategies that make use of lower amounts of environmentally polluting disinfectants.…”

“…Sonuç olarak, direnç plazmidlerinin aktarılması sayesinde genetik yapısı değişen hücreler antimikrobiyal ajanlara karşı daha fazla direnç kazanmış olur. 13,14 Cerrahiz periodontal tedaviye ek olarak antibiyotik kullanımı nasıl gündeme gelmiştir? Cerrahisiz periodontal tedavinin, periodontal anatomiye, hastaya ve hekime bağlı çeşitli sınırlamaları vardır.…”
