Resistance of human syncytiotrophoblast to hypotonic and thermal stress

Abstract: Summary. Human placental syncytiotrophoblast was not lysed when exposed to acutely hypotonic environments (distilled water) or during repeated freeze\p=n-\thawing. The ability of the syncytiotrophoblast to synthesize and secrete hCG was not blocked after exposure to hypotonic stress (0\m=.\055osmol) and elevated temperature (47\s=deg\C),treatments which caused lysis of erythrocytes and lymphocytes. The stressresistant property of the syncytiotrophoblast may be an important element in enabling its survival as a… Show more

“…In the past few years, a new field of research has developed that uses these organoids, enabling insights into human health and disease. These trophoblastorganoidscan survive long-term due to their characteristic properties [25,26], are genetically stable, and organize into villous-like structures that secrete essential proteins and hormones that would affect the mother's metabolism during the pregnancy. The Mini-placentas' could provide a model for early pregnancy.…”

“…It helps in selective bidirectional transport of material between the maternal and fetal circulation and also synthesizes protein and steroid hormones. 4 Apart from this the occurrence of polykaryons elsewhere is considered to be pathologic. The pathologic giant cells are Langhans' giant cells, foreign body giant cells, inflammatory giant cells, tumor giant cells and Touton giant cells. There are also miscellaneous types of giant cells such as Aschoff cells of rheumatic nodule and Reed Sternberg cells of Hodgkin's lymphoma.…”
