Implementation of sustainable solutions in the road construction industry is considered as one of the major research topics worldwide. The impact of aging process on the properties of asphalt cement and asphalt concrete was investigated using both of short and long-term aging. Scrap tire rubber was introduced into asphalt cement to modify its physical and rheological properties. Two percentages of crumb rubber (8 and 16) percent by weight of asphalt cement have been tried to modify the properties of asphalt cement, and to investigate its contribution in the aging process. Such modified asphalt was implemented in the construction of asphalt concrete. Marshal, Resilient Modulus, and tensile properties of rubber-modified asphalt concrete were tested and compared with different aging periods and with that of reference mix. The results show that aging for 7 hours of asphalt cement, make the asphalt stiffer, that lead to decreased penetration by an average value of (47.24%), ductility (49.6%) and increased softening point (10.75%) and creep stiffness (79.25%). It was concluded that 8% of crumb rubber is able to overcome the negative impact of short and long term aging on overall asphalt cement and asphalt concrete properties, and improves the rutting resistance at 1000 repetition by (32.4 % and 57.3%) for short and long term aging respectively.

In Iraq, under the effect of heavy traffic loading, high temperature and water damages, specific requirements are needed to control the quality of highway pavement materials in order to increase durability. The primary objectives of this study are evaluating the durability of superpave asphalt concrete mixtures which has been assessed through moisture damage resistance. The properties of superpave mix have been verified using indirect tensile strength test, double punch shear strength, compressive strength test, and rutting resistance under repeated loading. The impacts of moisture damage on such superpave asphalt concrete properties were evaluated. To meet the objective of this research, available local materials were used including asphalt cement (40-50), aggregate with nominal maximum size of 12.5 mm, and mineral filler. Three asphalt percentages were implemented, optimum asphalt content and an asphalt content of 0.5 percent above and 0.5 percent below optimum as per superpave procedure. The Superpave Gyratory Compaction was used to prepare the asphalt concrete specimens. The moisture damage impacts on conditioned specimens exhibits low resistance to indirect tensile strength, punching shear, and compressive strength by (-19%, -33%, -6%) at optimum asphalt content as compared with un-condition mix. The moisture-conditioned mix has lower resistance to permanent deformation (at 1000 cycles) by 93% as compared with the unconditioned mixture. Superpave asphalt concrete was shown to be durable against moisture damage by 81% at optimum asphalt content when compared to the requirement of (SCRB, 2007).

Utilizing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in new asphalt mixtures has increased in recent years because of its economic and environmental benefits. The flexibility of the recycled asphalt concrete (with cutback and emulsion) in terms of resilient modulus (Mr), rutting resistance, and permanent microstrain have been investigated in this work. Cylindrical specimens of 102 mm in diameter and 102 mm in height have been prepared from the recycled mixture after the short-term aging process. Specimens were subjected to 1200 repeated compressive stresses at (25) ºC. The vertical permanent microstrain was monitored through video capture. It was concluded that RAP mixture can hold the applied loading with minimal permanent deformation as compared to the recycled mixtures. The resilient modulus is lower by (24 and 39) % for mixes recycled with cutback and emulsion respectively as compared to that of RAP. The rate of strain (slope) increases by 11 % and 4 % when cutback and emulsion were implemented as recycling agent respectively as compared to that for RAP mixture.
