Resistance to Leaf Miners in Lycopersicon Accessions1

Abstract: When cultivars and accessions of the cultivated tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., and related species, were evaluated for resistance to a leaf miner, Liriomyza munda Frick, in greenhouse and field cage tests, the screening tests revealed several lines of L. esculentum having genes for adult nonpreference or larval antibiosis or both. All accessions of L. hirsutum Humb. & Bonpl. and L. hirsutum f. glabratum C. H. Mull, were virtually immune to attack in both greenhouse and field tests. Lycopersicon pim… Show more

“…Few tomato pinworms were present in Tests 1 and 3 so data for this pest are not included. Less damage and fewer lar- The high level of resistance of L. hirsutum (PI 126445 and PI 127826) and L. hirsutum f. glabratum (PI 126449) to the tomato pinworm (7) and vegetable leafminer (11) demonsstrated in greenhouse and laboratory studies was confirmed in the field in the present investigation. Levels of resistance demonstrated in at least 2 tests to either the tomato pinworm or vegetable leafminer in L. esculentum accessions (particularly PI 128230, PI 140430, N.S.S.L.…”

“…Natural host preference of insect for plants has been investigated by many researchers studying cultivar resistance (2,4,6,7,9) with considerable attention being devoted to host preference and attractance of an insect to color. Macdowall (3) reported greenhouse whitefly to be attracted to light in the monochromatic yellow portion of the spectrum (540-550 mju), and Weiss (10) reported whitefly to be attracted to a yellow-green surface.…”
