Resistance to sliding in orthodontics: misconception or method error? A systematic review and a proposal of a test protocol

Abstract: Resistance to sliding (RS) between the bracket, wire, and ligature has been largely debated in orthodontics. Despite the extensive number of published studies, the lack of discussion of the methods used has led to little understanding of this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to discuss variables affecting RS in orthodontics and to suggest an operative protocol. The search included PubMed©, Medline©, and the Cochrane Library©. References of full-text articles were manually analyzed. English-language articl… Show more

“…Displacement of the teeth might have major impact on good oral and dental health, as well as on a person’s appearance, contributing to an attractive smile, which can improve psychological self-esteem and self-confidence [ 1 ]. Orthodontic treatment is one of the most efficient paths to revise the position of the teeth [ 2 ]. The demand for orthodontic appliances is growing in various groups of age [ 3 ].…”

“…Incisors can affect antero-posterior lip position, especially when retraction mechanics are used. 62 - 64 The prediction of lip changes with respect to incisal movement varies considerably according to sex, 65 dentofacial morphology, 66 and ethnicity. For African Americans, the ratios of upper and lower incisor retraction to upper and lower lip retraction are 1.8:1 and 1.2:1, respectively.…”

“…Nonetheless, it should be noted that this proof-of-concept study only showed the UV-treated titanium surface can be coated with various percentages of PHMB and retained for certain time, which could be a strategy for maintaining a low occurrence of F. nucleatum and possibly preventing re-infection on the titanium. This kind of easy self-assembled coating can also be applied to different titanium-based medical applications, such as orthodontics [42,43], dentofacial orthopaedics [44,45], and other implant medical devices [5] that are prone to infection. This variety of applications might need different concentrations for the optimal application of PHMB.…”
