Resistance welding of carbon fibre reinforced PEKK by means of CNT webs

Abstract: Single lap shear specimens were manufactured using resistance welding of carbon fibre reinforced substrates by means of CNT web-based heating elements. Heating elements were manufactured by embedding the CNT web layers between layers of PEKK/glass fibre and connecting them to copper electrodes. An experimental campaign explored their electrothermal behaviour influencing the welding process. Single lap shear specimens were then welded at a pressure of 0.05 MPa and different levels of power and duration. An opti… Show more

“…The inserts and interlayers used in RSW variants need to be resistive materials so that current can flow through these heating elements to generate heat. The metallic heating elements, however, might be relatively heavy, promote corrosion, or create residual stress that creates cracks in the joints [147]. Magnetically assisted RSW (MA-RSW) produced spot welds with a higher tensile strength compared to conventional RSW; hence, it has been proposed to integrate it with a welding gun [148].…”

“…These alternative heating elements produce welded joints with superior strength and consistency compared with those produced using carbon fiber heating elements. Recent studies have also investigated the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as heating elements [ 15 , 16 , 17 ] and have reported that welding carbon fiber/PEKK (CF/PEKK) laminates with a CNT web yielded a flexible structure with an impressive single-lap shear strength of approximately 30 MPa.…”

“…Early studies explored the application of resistance heatingbased welding using a carbon fiber heating element to ensure integrity and avoid the introduction of foreign materials within the laminate [9][10][11]. However, owing to issues such as disruption of the reinforcement phase and reduced temperature uniformity-attributable Polymers 2024, 16, 750 2 of 14 to the uneven resistance of carbon fiber heating elements-research pivoted toward stainless steel mesh heating elements [12][13][14]. These alternative heating elements produce welded joints with superior strength and consistency compared with those produced using carbon fiber heating elements.…”
