Resolution recovery for Compton camera using origin ensemble algorithm

Abstract: Purpose: Compton cameras (CCs) use electronic collimation to reconstruct the images of activity distribution. Although this approach can greatly improve imaging efficiency, due to complex geometry of the CC principle, image reconstruction with the standard iterative algorithms, such as ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM), can be very time-consuming, even more so if resolution recovery (RR) is implemented. We have previously shown that the origin ensemble (OE) algorithm can be used for the reconstruc… Show more

“…Some preliminary simulations including energy resolution for the scatterers and absorber show a non-negligible degradation of the shift estimates. To a certain extend, some compensation should be achieved by modeling the limited resolution into the reconstruction, either in the system matrix or in the selection of the cone parameters [14]- [17]. For the considered CC configuration with seven scatterers including multiple coincidences into the reconstruction helped to increase the statistical quality of the data and compensate for the effects of miscalculated E 0 introduced by two-interaction coincidences.…”

“…Moreover, to further improve the spatial resolution for TOF-DuPECT system, a resolution recovery method can also be considered and implemented via an estimation of the depth of interaction in the detector or by modeling the uncertainty of the timing. In 2016, Andreyev proposed a modified version of the SOE algorithm to model the probability distributions of the measured energy and the interaction locations in the detectors of a Compton camera 52 . This modified SOE algorithm enables images to be reconstructed with a resolution recovery option with little additional computational cost.…”

“…After the iterations, the sources are better resolved and the background around the sources decreases. The image reconstruction using SOE can potentially be further improved by implementing resolution recovery [17].…”
