Resonance Energy Transfer: Influence of Heteroatoms on the Donor's Properties

Abstract: Measurement has been made of the critical transfer distances for five donor-acceptor systems-fluorene, carbazole, dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and 9-fluorenol as donors and 9-phenylanthracene as the acceptor. The good agreement, between the experimentally measured and theoretically calculated critical transfer distances for the first three systems, indicates the applicability of Forster's dipole mechanism of resonance energy transfer. The measured and calculated critical transfer distances for the last two … Show more

“…tained values of interchromophoric distance which closely approximate known distances. Weber and Teale (1959), Bennett (1964), Ellis and Solomon (1967), Stryer and Haugland (1967), and others (see Forster, 1959) have also provided experimental evidence which supports Forster's theory. This theory is of potential importance to protein studies since it makes feasible the calculation of distances and changes in distance between chromophoric residues on proteins in solution.…”

“…Other researchers also studied the excitation energy transfer from naphthalene derivatives to acriflavine. When the critical transfer distances (R 0 ) were experimentally measured for this donor-acceptor system, the experimental values of R 0 were between 25 and 28 Å which were in accordance with the theoretical values calculated from the absorption and fluorescence spectra [9]. Also, the energy transfer can occur through spontaneous emission.…”

“…The fluorescence spectra were determined with the spectrofluorometer and the procedure already described. 2 The equipment used for the energy transfer measurements has also been described.2 5All solutions were prepared in redistilled 95% ethanol and were deaerated by flushing with nitrogen for 15 min prior to use.…”
