Resonance spin assignments inC12+12

Abstract: Angular correlation techniques have been used to determine the spin of a strong resonance observed in the 12 C ϩ 12 C(3 Ϫ ;9.64 MeV͒ inelastic scattering channel, at a bombarding energy of 33.5 MeV in the center-ofmass system. The alpha particles produced in the sequential decay 12 C(3 Ϫ )→ 8 Be͑g.s.͒ ϩ ␣ 0 were detected using four double-sided silicon strip detectors. The data are consistent with a spin assignment of J ϭ18 ϩ for this resonance. The current results are compared to calculations of resonance beh… Show more

“…In the Brink-Bloch model, both the ground state and the 3 − 1 state have the same intrinsic triangular shape, and the 3 − 1 state has three units of angular momentum around its three-fold symmetry axis. The new mutual 3 − 1 data complement earlier measurements of the mutual 0 + 2 (7.65 J=3 L MeV) channel [72] and the 0 + 2 3 − 1 channel [73,74] and extend over the energy range E cm = 30-45 MeV.…”

“…Spin alignment is found in a diverse number of reactions including inelastic scattering [1][2][3][4][5][6], deep elastic scatter ing [7][8][9][10], projectile fragmentation [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18], fission [19,20], Coulomb excitation [21], and other direct reactions [22][23][24][25][26][27][28], For peripheral reactions, the dominant angular momentum in the reaction is the initial orbital angular momentum between the projectile and target, which is perpendicular to both the beam axis and the reaction plane. It is therefore not surprising that many fragments have their spin aligned, on av erage, parallel to this direction [7,11,12,[21][22][23]27], However, there are some cases where different alignments are found [13][14][15][16]18], Measurement of a fragment's spin alignment can be deduced from its decay products, including fi particles though NMR techniques [11,12], from the recoil induced by y-ray decay [23,2...…”
