Resource Recovery From the Agro-Industrial Solid Waste Towards Sustainable Future

Abstract

Agro industrial waste refers to the by- products generated from agro–industrial activities. These wastes can include cropresidues, fruits and vegetablespeels, sugarcane, bagasse, husk, coconut and more. The status of agro industrial waste management varies globally and is influenced by factors such as technological advancements, regulatory framework and economic considerations. One of these constituent agro industrial wastes is pectin. Pectin utilization as food additive is gradually increasing and nowadays its production plays major role in the country's economy. Country like India, mainly imports pectin from Brazil, China and Germany. India's 70% population depends on agriculture sector and the wastes generated from this sector have a great potential to contribute towards India's economy. Open burning of remaining residues increases the greenhouse gases (GHG's) and open dumping will increase the problem of leachate. If India starts production of pectin from agriculture waste, in short time it will become exporter of pectin, which will further may add-on to the country's economy.
