Resources, capacities and corridors for energy imports to Europe

Abstract: Purpose -Two main activities of the EC FP7 Risk of Energy Availability: Common Corridors for Europe Supply Security (REACCESS) project applied a systematic approach to collect the main characteristics of energy supply corridors starting from mining activities in exporting regions up to the import infrastructures and capacities of EU27þ countries. The aim of the present paper is to summarise identified information on import potentials and the possible corridors for the EU27þ energy supply of the future. This in… Show more

“…Pfenninger et al [25] demonstrated that a network of CSP plants could supply baseload and load-following electricity, at levels of reliability comparable to fossil fuel or nuclear power plants, and at costs comparable to photovoltaic (PV) or offshore wind. Morocco has been identified as an ideal country for CSP development [27,34]. First, there is an opportunity for CSP to replace existing diesel generators, which are substantially more expensive to operate, to satisfy local needs.…”

“…As such, wind energy tends to be a government-created market globally with the underlying industry fueled by government subsidies [9,14,15]. With geopolitical drivers to have Europe depend less on oil-and gas-rich nations, such as Russia and several Middle Eastern countries [16], DONG Energy has played an important role in the execution of the aggressive climate change mitigation strategy of the government of Denmark. DONG Energy's role in the Danish mitigation strategy is particularly noticeable when it comes to the diffusion of wind energy in the form of a showcase within Europe.…”

“…Within the Risk of Energy Availability: Common Corridors for Europe Supply Security (REACCESS) project, the potentials for solar electricity generation and export from MENA to Europe were specified, and detailed technical and cost data for electricity generation and power transmission options were compiled (Trieb et al, 2009;Pregger et al, 2011). The work published by Trieb et al (2012) provides an updated and integrated techno-economic analysis of REACCESS, which results in a concrete scenario of physical CSP electricity import to European demand centres starting after 2020 up to the year 2050.…”
