Respiratory resistance measured by an airflow perturbation device

Abstract: Abstract. The airflow perturbation device (APD) is an instrument for the measurement of respiratory resistance. The APD is small, lightweight fast and requires no special breathing manoeuvres. Airflow perturbation determines resistance by superimposing a periodic signal onto spontaneous breathing with a variable resistance device. Respiratory impedance is the ratio of magnitude of pressure perturbation to magnitude of flow perturbation, and respiratory resistance is the in-phase portion of respiratory impedanc… Show more

“…It is the measurement of clinical and physiological interest, and is useful for evaluating the respiratory effects of bronchodilatory or bronchoconstrictive drugs. Increased resistance is usually due to narrowing and collapse of airways and clinically related to an assortment of respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis (Lausted and Johnson, 1999;Ruppel, 2004).…”

“…The airflow perturbation device (APD) is a medical instrument developed for noninvasive measurement of respiratory resistance that includes airways, lung tissue, and chest wall components [1] [2] [3] [4]. It is quite simple to use, and has advantages for measurements on small children, unconscious or uncooperative patients, in the home, and on animals.…”

“…The wheel modifies, or perturbs, flow rates and mouth pressures, the amounts of which depend on respiratory resistance and device resistance [12] [13]. Device resistance is measured, so respiratory resistance can be obtained.…”
