Respiratory symptoms in children and exposure to pesticides

Abstract: In Lebanon, childhood asthma is an important disease and pesticides are commonly used. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether exposure to pesticides has chronic effects on the respiratory health of Lebanese children.A crosssectional study was performed on children from a randomly selected sample of Lebanese public schools. Exposure to pesticides was evaluated by a standardised questionnaire and a residential exposure score, and respiratory symptoms were assessed by using the American Thoracic Soc… Show more

“…14 The prevalence of symptoms of chronic respiratory illness (22%) was consistent with Norway study, 15 but higher than the Lebanese study. 20 This could be explained by the younger age of the interviewees in the Lebanese study. Another study compared the results of two different databases using three criteria: the prevalence of airways obstruction was 13% according to the European criterion, 45% according to the American criterion, and 23% according to clinical 25 The latter result was in agreement with the present study.…”

“…26 In Lebanon, a study using similar criteria to those of the present study, revealed an association between several types of pesticide exposure -domestic, environmental, and occupational (parents) -and respiratory symptoms among rural students. 20 The use of multivariate analysis based on a hierarchical model revealed the independent effects of several agricultural activities. Grouping pesticide exposure in different forms to what a subject is exposed to showed that the group of farmers not exposed to pesticides had a high prevalence of respiratory symptoms.…”

“…The acute toxic effects are easily recognized, while the effects of long-term exposure at low doses are hard to diagnose (Chakraborty et al, 2009). These include: temporary and nonspecific symptoms such as eye irritation, dermatitis, asthma, peripheral neuropathy, chronic neurobehavioral motor dysfunction, burning sensation in the face, headache, dizziness, respiratory problems and sialorrhoea, and even chronic diseases such as cancer as well as disorders of the reproductive system (Ohayo-Mitoko et al, 2000;Miranda et al, 2002;Sanborn et al, 2002;Safi, 2002;Salameh et al, 2003;Del Prado-Lu, 2007). Accidental and intentional poisoning have been better studied than occupational exposure, where biological monitoring of workers exposed to pesticides has been widely recommended both to prevent poisoning and for epidemiological studies (Hofmann et al, 2010).…”

“…Indeed, leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other cancers (Richter and Chlamtac, 2002), neurologic pathologies, respiratory symptoms (Salameh et al, 2003) and hormonal and reproductive abnormalities have been associated with pesticide exposure, mostly in case-control and ecological studies. A variety of pesticides is used in greenhouses to maintain high crop yields.…”
