Response Components of LiF:Mg,Ti Around a Moderated Am-Be Neutron Source

Abstract: The responses of TLD-1010, TLD-700 and TLD-600 thermoluminescence dosemeters to the radiation field inside a water tank enclosing an isotopic 241Am-Be neutron source are analysed. Separate contributions coming from thermal neutrons, neutrons with energies above thermal and gamma rays to the total response of the three types of TLD are obtained. This is accomplished by assuming that the gamma responses for materials with different 6Li enrichments are identical and that the neutron response of TLD-700 is negligi… Show more

“…The neutron interaction cross‐section for different lithium isotopes is a complicated function of energy but is a maximum for thermal neutrons. TLD‐600 has a thermal neutron cross‐section that is >1000 times as large as that of TLD‐700 and is therefore a sensitive thermal neutron detector, whereas the TLD‐700 response is essentially limited to the photon component only. Neither type of TLD is typically useful for measuring neutrons with energy above thermal.…”

“…For out‐of‐field dosimetry in high‐energy photon beams, the TLD‐700 is recommended for use. It has a very low thermal neutron cross section, but will accurately measure only photon doses.…”

“…In order to characterize the neutron field, the thermoluminescent technique chosen in this work was used in combination with Bonner sphere spectrometry. This combination has been previously used by the authors in a linear electron accelerator LINAC installation (Mendez et al 2002a, 2002b, Barquero et al 2005 and in a preliminary work at the same PET cyclotron under study here (Mendez et al 2004). Neutron spectra and thermal fluxes were obtained at several points in the vicinity of the cyclotron.…”
