Response of cochlear nerve fibers to brief acoustic stimuli: Role of discharge-history effects

Abstract: The probability that a cochlear nerve fiber spike discharge occurs during a time interval delta t depends on both the acoustic stimulus and on aftereffects from earlier spike discharges. We have examined the influence of discharge-history on post-stimulus time (PST) histogram responses to acoustic click and tone-burst stimuli. Discharge-history effects were found to include the modification of observed interpeak times of PST responses to clicks, a loss of distinct peaks in the click response of high characteri… Show more

“…fibers (Kiang et al, 1965;Gaumond et al, 1983;Young and Barta, 1986;Carney, 1993;Li and Young, 1993;Miller and Wang, 1993;Zhang et al, 2001) and modeled, for example, by a second, very long, time constant for the recovery process during the RRP (Carney, 1993;Miller and Wang, 1993;Zhang et al, 2001). Such refractory properties, however, are not supported by the direct measurements (Brown, 1994;Dynes, 1996;Cartee et al, 2000;Miller et al, 2001;Shepherd et al, 2004;Morsnowski et al, 2006).…”

“…2d, 3d). The latter phenomenon has been reported widely in the literature (Gray, 1967;Gaumond et al, 1982Gaumond et al, , 1983Young and Barta, 1986;Li and Young, 1993;Prijs et al, 1993;Johnson, 1996), and the failure of the model to capture this phenomenon has already been pointed out by Young and Barta (1986) and Li and Young (1993).…”

“…In models of ANF spike patterns, the excitatory (release) events are commonly thought to be produced by a Poisson point process that is homogeneous during spontaneous activity (Kiang et al, 1965;Gaumond et al, 1983;Young and Barta, 1986;Carney, 1993;Li and Young, 1993;Miller and Wang, 1993;Johnson, 1996;Zhang et al, 2001). A fractal doubly stochastic point process has also been proposed to account for rate trends over longer timescales (Ͼ100 ms; Lowen andTeich, 1991, 1992;Delgutte, 1996;Jackson and Carney, 2005).…”
