Introduction Materials and Methods Results Discussion References GENERAL SUMMARY iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS People have helped me in all of my major life endeavors. My Ph.D. is no exception. The nature of the research contained in this dissertation made the involvement of many people a necessity. Andrea Dom performed most of the lymphocyte blastogenesis work. She was also responsible for the large task of keeping the lab running: making sure things were ready and available. You do a wonderful job Andrea. Dagmar Frank performed most of the neutrophil fiinction assays. As with anyone who is good at what they do, Dagmar makes it look easy. It isn't; I've tried to fill in for her on occasion. Thanks Dagmar. Tom Skadow is now head neutrophil isolator and animal handler. Tom also plays a large role with Andrea in keeping the lab running. In addition, Tom played the important role of entertaining steer #340 on occasion. Your work is really appreciated Tom. Darl Enga, Tim, and others have all helped out washing dishes and bleeding animals. Their work makes the rest of us more efficient at what we do. Thanks y'all. Belinda Goff played a leading role in the first pig/dexamethasone experiment. She was the QAC (quality assurance coordinator) that kept us on the GLP path. Of course, she was the point person in organizing that experiment as well. Thanks BG. Vicky Hall was very helpful in getting me started in flow cytometry. Kristy Harkins has been instrumental in overseeing all of the flow work for the BIV animals. Thanks also Kristy for taking an interest in me. Thanks to Padma and JefT for running the many samples. Susan Carpenter has been an integral part of the BIV project. She brings an enthusiasm and drive to the project. I have also learned to appreciate the virologist's perspective from her. Thanks to Susan, Mary Jane Long, and Yvonne Wannemuehler for their work on virus isolation and testing. Cecelia Whetstone performed the ELISAs that are V reported in the first set of BFV experiments. She also performed the early Western Blot analyses for HIV. Thanks to Martin Van Der Maaten for discovering this virus so I would have a Ph.D. project to work on. Dr. Van Der Maaten has helped with animal housing, providing virus testing, reagents, virus stocks, discussions, animals, and other things as well. I would also like to thank him for showing me that science can be fun, or at least humorous. Jeff Isaacson has also been part of the BIV team. Thanks for the discussions Jeff. Anna Rovid has been a co-sufferer on the BFV project. She is the macrophage expert. Thanks for the support, friend. I've learned lots from you and most of it had to do with life, not science. Jim Roth, Thanks Jim. When people ask me for advice on selecting a graduate school program I tell them to look for a good major professor. When I came to interview here everyone had wonderful things to say about you. The one negative comment I heard was that you were kinda busy and sometimes hard to find, but you would always make time for your students. Well it was true, and...
