Response of Human Dental Pulp Capped with MTA and Calcium Hydroxide Powder

Abstract: After 30 days, Ca(OH)2 powder covered with calcium hydroxide cement showed faster hard tissue bridge formation compared to MTA. After 60 days, Ca(OH)2 powder or MTA materials showed a similar and excellent histological response with the formation of a hard tissue bridge in almost all cases with low inflammatory infiltrate.

“…This is an important finding, since it is known that all materials can induce different levels of acute inflammation in the pulp. 3,4 Moreover, Single Bond was able to induce a significantly higher secretion of IL-8 than MTA. Since IL-8 is a potent neutrophil chemotactic protein, secretion of this cytokine by migrating neutrophils was expected.…”

“…2 Pulp capping materials are largely used in dental practice to promote dental pulp repair, especially materials based on calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH) 2 ], adhesive systems and, more recently, mineral trioxide aggregates (MTA). 3 Traditionally, various formulations of Ca(OH) 2 -containing materials represent the most usual types of capping treatment. However, the physical limitations of these materials have led researchers and clinicians to seek new materials.…”

“…It stimulates reparative dentine formation faster and thicker than calcium hydroxide cement. However, MTA has delayed setting time, poor handling characteristics and is relatively expensive (4) .…”

“…We had selected Ca as a control in vivo experiment. Dentin bridge formation in calcium hydroxide showed faster compared to MTA 36) . In the clinical case, exposed pulp should be closed by the complete dentin bridge in a short period.…”
