Response of in vitro reared honey bee larvae to various doses of Paenibacillus larvae larvae spores

Abstract: -The relationship between the number of Paenibacillus larvae larvae spores fed individually to 24-28, 48-52 and 72-76 h old Apis mellifera ligustica larvae and the number of larvae dying from the P. l. larvae infection was investigated as well as the effect of sublethal infection with P. l. larvae on larval development time and adult weight. The larvae were laboratory reared, thus, excluding the influence of nurse bees. The results show that larvae 24-28 h old are most susceptible to infection with P. l. larva… Show more

“…They infect the larvae while feeding them food contaminated with the infectious spores. The younger the larvae, the more susceptible they are to infection (RiessbergerGalle et al 2001;Brødsgaard et al 1998). The spores germinate in the larval midgut, approximately one day after ingestion.…”

“…AFB is one of the most severe bee diseases (Riessberger-Galle et al 2001;Brødsgaard et al 1998). It is classified as a List B disease by the OIE (Office International des Epizooties / World Organization for Animal Health) and is considered a transmissible disease of socio-economic importance (De Graaf et al 2006).…”

“…Spores are only infectious to young larvae that become infected by consuming spore-contaminated food (Hitchcock et al 1979). As few as 10 spores are enough to infect and kill a larva (Brødsgaard et al 1998;Woodrow 1942). The most conspicuous symptom in colonies suffering from clinical AFB disease is irregular brood capping, with capped and uncapped cells scattered irregularly across the brood frames.…”

“…Rinderer and Rothenbuhler (1974) demonstrated the influence of pollen on the mortality of spore-fed larvae. Pollen contains microorganisms which act as antagonists of P. larvae larvae (Brødsgaard et al, 1998). The presence of pollen in the intestine of the larvae may act to inhibit P. larvae larvae (Reiche et al, 1996).…”
